Discord is making some noise in the social network industry, especially due to its connection to Fortnite gamers, though it is not specifically for gamers. This social networking app makes it possible for everyone from small niche groups to large communities to have a place to connect with one another.

Discord Overview:

  • Free to use
  • Ages 13 and up
  • Available on several platforms
  • Popular with gamers but used by others
  • Great way to find your tribe or create one with your own server
  • Discord bots can be used as moderators on servers to keep things safe
  • Safety concerns can be combated with setting and rules in place
  • Caters to large groups

What Is Discord?

Discord is a chat app popular among teens and gamers, although you do not have to be either to use the app. It was designed for niche-specific groups to have a way to hang out via text, video, or voice.

For instance, if you are a BMX bike enthusiast, a yoga lover, or even a 70s movie buff, you can find and hang out with people that share your interest in Discord from around the world. And- of course- gamers have plenty of groups to join.

A tremendous upside to Discord is how it caters to large social groups. The user creates a server for their group and can then break the server down into multiple channels that can cater to different users of that group. And Discord comes with several tools to automate admin moderation.

Signing Up for Discord

Signing up for and using Discord is free. You should be 13 or up for a Discord account, though some individual channels do require you to be at least 18 to join due to the content present. A Discord download is available for Windows, macOS, Linux, and Apple and Android devices.

Privacy and Safety Concerns

With so many teenagers signing up for Discord, it makes sense that parents are concerned with keeping their kids safe. Chatting online has always posed risks to everyone, but with the right settings and rules in place, you can breathe a little easier.

Discord servers have moderators that keep out for dangerous and predatory activity. It also provides a lot of privacy and safety settings that you can set to help protect your children. These settings include “Safe Direct Messaging” that scans for explicit content and choosing whether data can be collected for personalization or not.

It is important to note, though, that while those moderator and safety settings can certainly be helpful, they may not prevent everything. Parents will need to set rules for their children to follow while using Discord, such as they can only accept friend requests from people they know.

Users have a difficult time joining groups as they are not easy to find. It usually takes an invitation link from a current member. Also, users cannot just be added to groups- they have to give consent. All of this makes it more difficult for your children to stumble across trouble.

Like any other social network, there are risks. However, prevention methods can go a long way toward preventing these risks. Upon your Discord login, prior to taking another step, get your safety and security settings in place and make sure family members know any rules they must follow.

Overall, Discord can be a fun and exciting way to connect with people who share your likes and dislikes. With safety steps in place, anyone can benefit from such a social network.
